Why we are trying to preserve the Marco Eagle Sanctuary at 665 Tigertail Ct:

Less than 50 years ago, Marco Island was a quiet tropical island in a sunny paradise surrounded by mangroves and abundant wildlife. After years of real estate interest and development, dredging of canals, residential and commercial building, population growth, and promotion of the tourist industry, Marco Island is left with minimal green space.

  • We must preserve this 11.6 acre parcel of land so we do not become an island of buildings and parking lots.
  • We must preserve what little is left of our island’s integrity and wildlife environment.
  • We must preserve this land and the habitat of an active eagle nest since 2004.
  • The Bald Eagle, our national symbol, is a protected species. It is the mission of the Marco Eagle Sanctuary  Foundation to protect the bald eagles on our island.
  • Protect the many species of native birds now located on the property.
  • It is the mission of the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation to protect this green space  as a Preserve or Conservation Area to be utilized by the community for enjoyment and educational purposes.

If we do not preserve our green space, protect our wildlife and its habitats, our paradise will loose its heritage as the Last Paradise and its long standing reputation as an Eagle Sanctuary.


Plans for Community Involvement :

We will encourage student observation and study of the Eagles nesting period, arrival of the chicks, and fledglings.

Elementary students will participate in a “Name the Eagles” contest which will include their choice of names, an essay about the importance of the Eagles, and eagle artwork.

Encourage student participation of Arbor Day Celebrations.

Provide local garden clubs a location for the design and development of butterfly gardens, and gardens utilizing native flowers and plants.

Provide local garden clubs a location to work with the Junior Gardeners of Tommy Barfield Elementary.

Consult with the Beautification Committee for design and installation plans for park benches.

Residents, tourists, bird enthusiasts and photographers would enjoy eagle observations from an eagle viewing platform with information charts and progress reports.

Consult with the Bike Committee, incorporating this property as part of the Marco Island Bike Path Route.

The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) is a not-for-profit 501 (C) (3) organization founded in 2010. Our primary objective is the preservation of the American Bald Eagles and their habitats on Marco Island, Florida.

Our Mission is to work with the citizens of Marco Island as well as, City, County, and State organizations to guarantee the safety of the active Bald Eagle nest on the Marco Eagle Sanctuary at 665 Tigertail Ct. and other locations as new Eagles return to a friendly environment. We will work to educate the community about the importance of these majestic birds and how to expand the bird population on an Island once known as an” Eagle Sanctuary”.

The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) is a not-for-profit 501 (C) (3) organization founded in 2010. Our primary objective is the preservation of the American Bald Eagles and their habitats on Marco Island, Florida.

MESF consists of volunteers only, no salaried employees.  Your contributions are used to pay for expenses to lease, secure and maintain the Marco Eagle Sanctuary located on Tigertail Ct.

American Eagle Foundation

Challenger is his name (in honor of the lost space shuttle crew). He is cared for by the non-profit American Eagle Foundation (AEF). He's a 'human-socialized' bird raised by the people who rescued him after hed been blown from a wild Louisiana nest in a storm as a baby in the late 1980's. Declared non-releasable' by federal and state wildlife authorities, he was trained by the AEF to perform educational free-flight demonstrations at high profile public events.
