The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) is a not-for-profit 501 (C) (3) organization founded in 2010. We are a 100% volunteer organization, we have no paid employees and our board of directors volunteer their valuable time as well. Our primary objective is the preservation of the American Bald Eagles and their habitats on Marco Island, Florida.
Our Mission is to work with the citizens of Marco Island as well as, City, County, and State organizations to guarantee the safety of the active Bald Eagle nest on the Marco Eagle Sanctuary on Tigertail Ct. and other locations as new Eagles return to a friendly environment. We will work to educate the community about the importance of these majestic birds and how to expand the bird population on an Island once known as an” Eagle Sanctuary”.
The Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) was established in 2010 when we had two active nest on the Island: one at the Eagle Sanctuary located at 665 Tigertail Ct. and the other on the Marco Island Country Club property. The preservation of these habitats has never been more important. The Tigertail Ct Marco Eagle Sanctuary property is the current home to a pair of adults with two eaglets which use this property year round for nesting, training and hunting on the Island, with green space rapidly disappearing we must work quickly to live up to and re-establish our Eagle Sanctuary status.
The remaining active nest is located in the center of the 11.6 acre undeveloped parcel on Tigertail Ct. and is owned by the Collier Count School Board and now leased by the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation. Although the Eagles (nest # CO-029) are protected under State and Federal guidelines many inappropriate land uses have been proposed for this property. To date all these uses have been denied as the property is zoned for Residential Use, and the locations of the eagle nest severely limits the available building space.
Now another group is proposing an 83 thousand square foot building on the site, which would require the removal and or destruction of the Eagles home. This building would cover over three quarters of the land available and destroy one of the last preserve properties on the island. As long as MESF keeps it long term lease intact the property will be saved for the Eagles, please help us with this endeavor by donating whatever funds you can afford.
Marco Island's last pair of Eagles need your help, Join us and your neighbors to protect these Majestic Birds, a symbol of our great country. Sign the MESF petition, volunteer, call your City Council members, and the Collier County School Board members to tell them to stop this planned development.
